Proin for Dogs
What is Proin used for?
Proin is used in the management of urinary incontinence in dogs.
Benefits:
Helps tighten the urethral sphincter to help control the leakage of urine.
How it works:
Proin contains phenylpropanolamine, which helps tighten the urethral sphincter muscle to control the leakage of urine from the bladder.
What you should know:
Proin will not cure urinary incontinence, but it will help manage the condition. It may take several days for the medication to take full effect. To maintain beneficial results, Proin must be given continually. Stopping treatment will cause the symptoms to recur.
How to give this medication:
Proin chewable tablets are given with food. It is available in 25 mg, 50 mg and 75 mg chewable tablets. The usual dosage is 1 to 2 mg/kg body weight every 12 hours. Give this medication exactly as directed by your veterinarian. If you do not understand the directions, ask the veterinarian or pharmacist to explain them to you.
If you miss a dose:
If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and give the next one as directed. Do not double dose.
Proin should not be used in:
Do not use Proin in pregnant dogs or in dogs suffering from glaucoma, hyperthyroidism, heart disease or high blood pressure.
Possible side effects:
Some patients are more sensitive to the actions of Proin and may exhibit side effects in an exaggerated degree. Side effects may include excitability, restlessness, irritability, increased heart rate or appetite loss. Signs of an allergic reaction may include hives, scratching, facial swelling, diarrhea, vomiting, seizure or coma. If you observe any of these side effects, contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.
