It often relieves pruritis which does not respond to other therapy. Temaril-P is also used for the treatment of kennel cough or tracheobronchitis, bronchitis including all allergic bronchitis and infections and coughs.
What is Temaril-P used for?
Temaril-P is used for the relief of itching and the reduction of inflammation commonly associated with most skin disorders of dogs such as the eczema caused by internal disorders, otitis, and dermatitis (allergic, parasitic, pustular, and nonspecific). It often relieves pruritis which does not respond to other therapy. Temaril-P is recommended for the treatment of “kennel cough” or tracheobronchitis, bronchitis including all allergic bronchitis and infections and coughs of nonspecific origin.
Benefits:
Provides relief for itching and inflammation due to allergies and other causes. Minimizes scratching, which can aggravate skin conditions. May be used to treat “kennel cough”.
How it works:
Temaril-P combines the antipruritic and antitussive action of trimeprazine with the anti-inflammatory action of prednisolone. Temaril-P is recommended for the relief of itching regardless of cause. It is commonly used in the reduction of inflammation associated with most skin disorders of dogs such as the eczema caused by internal disorders, otitis, and dermatitis (allergic, parasitic, pustular, and nonspecific). It often relieves pruritis which does not respond to other therapy. Temaril-P has been found to be effective therapy and adjunctive therapy in various cough conditions of dogs. Therefore, in addition to its antipruritic action, Temaril-P is recommended for the treatment of “kennel cough” or tracheobronchitis, bronchitis including all allergic bronchitis and infections and coughs of nonspecific origin.
What you should know:
Temaril-P is not a cure, but can effectively manage the symptoms of the condition. Temaril-P should begin to work within hours of administration. Symptoms will recur if use of Temaril-P is discontinued. It may be administered to animals suffering from acute or chronic bacterial infections provided the infection is controlled by appropriate antibiotic or chemotherapeutic agents.
How to give this medication:
The recommended initial dose is 1/2 tablet twice daily for dogs up to 10 lbs., 1 tablet twice daily for dogs 11-20 lbs, 2 tablets twice daily for dogs 21-40 lbs, 3 tablets twice daily for dog over 40 lbs. After 4 days, dosage may be reduced in half. Prolonged treatment must be withdrawn gradually. Give this medication exactly as directed by your veterinarian. If you do not understand the directions, ask the veterinarian or pharmacist to explain them to you.
If you miss a dose:
If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and give the next one as directed. Do not double dose.
Temaril-P should not be used in:
Do not use in dogs with systemic fungal infections, Cushing’s disease, high blood pressure, kidney disease or congestive heart failure. Temaril-P is not for use in pregnant animals.
Possible side effects:
Side effects of corticosteroids may include sodium retention and potassium loss, negative nitrogen balance, suppressed adrenal cortical function, delayed wound healing, osteoporosis, vomiting and diarrhea. Cushing’s syndrome in dogs has been reported in association with prolonged or repeated steroid therapy. Possible increased susceptibility to bacterial invasion and/or the exacerbation of preexisting bacterial infection may occur in patients receiving corticosteroids. This problem can be avoided by concomitant use of appropriate anti-infective agents. Possible side effects attributable to phenothiazine derivatives include sedation or intensification and prolongation of the action of analgesics, sedatives and general anesthetics. If you observe any of these side effects, contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.
